Case Study - Methods
On the invitation of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt for their research programme, “The Shape of a Practice” (October/November 2020), Huiying put together a case study of methodological approaches based off her MA work carried out between 2016-2018, entitled “Re-earthing: A Social Semiotics of Agroecological Futures”.
Set in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, this case study considers our changing orientations to landscape. By examining methods of intentionally unlearning, the research suggests that a self-reflexive methodology unsettles the way we engage with data, making clear how vision and narrative are implicated in information that may initially seem objective.
The case study PDF, and more, is available at the Anthropocene Curriculum. With Michelle Lai, she presented the case study on the panel, Social Witnessing, moderated by Christoph Rosol alongside artist and researcher Ravi Agarwal and academic Paulina Lopez.
Huiying was also a panellist on the panel discussion, Place and Space moderated by theoretician and curator Abbéy Odunlami, alongside cultural critic Brian Holmes, artist, activist and researcher Imani Jacqueline Brown, and curator and researcher Margarida Mendes.
